My father bought a farm in Franschhoek in the early 1940 from Mr R.A.Barrie of 'Keerweder', Franschhoek. He was the former manager of the TGME and was a great hunter in his time. His house was full of hunting trophies and memorabilia. He had a magnificent dining suite that he had had made specially for him during his time in Pilgrims' Rest, from Tambuti wood, of which the legs had been turned by pedal operated lathes. I believe they must originally have been part of the furnishings of Alanglade House. I was a small child at the time and remember him with affection. He gave me a lion skull and the skin of a lioness he had shot, of which the head was mounted. When he retired to a house in Plumstead, Cape Town a few later my father bought four of the chairs (carvers) at auction, which I inherited. They are prized possessions, though I shall have to let them go when I move into smaller accommodation.
