Twelve Travel Shots
I’ve indulged myself by picking twelve of my favourite photos I’ve taken while travelling, and appending some short explanations of why I like them. I’m not a real photographer, so although I kinda like the composition of some, it’s more about how the subject matter, and the experience of where i was, coincide to make meaning for me. But take a look, and let me know if you like any. The pics’ captions are at the bottom of the shots.

That one of the vultures is wicked cool.
Thanks. I have a whole bunch, actually, I must put a vulture gallery up. Marabous as well.
I love the one you took of your friend in Camps Bay. Love the perspective over the boys’ shoulders and the close-up of her eye – you feel as if you can look into her soul. Combined with her earnestness, you feel how important this all is, what she’s doing.
And the Malaysia pic – purely because I love the colours and the abstract opaque layer you’ve put over it!
Nice shots Chris! I especially like:
- Lisbon cool (I love Lisbon’s charming decay)
- The vandal bridge shot
- The Washington monument shot (I’m a big fan of wintery photographs)
- The Temple of Jupiter
- The vultures
More please …
Nice stuff Chris! Wanna come work for Getaway?
The Temple of Jupiter shot is wonderful.
Zuma’s cousin is the best shot, hands down. The cross on his back being echoed by the telephone poles is sublime. It’s like a deserted Golgotha. Good stuff.
That’s it. I’m never writing columns again. If you put up pics, you just get praise, instead of some idiot telling you he’s going to kill you. Thanks for the kind words, people.
Thanks Richard. Hey, see you got a hugely deserved thank you on The Plastics’ new album. It’s a good album, been living with it for a week on my car cd player.
Thanks Justin. I have another one, of a man being with a red umbrella pointing out at the temple. I’ll put that up some time. It’s a bit out of focus, alas.
Ah, every man and woman’s dream. Except you’ve told me what it’s REALLY like travelling to exotic locations to work.
Lisbon is a great city, that’s for sure. Thanks Liam. I’ve got a close up of another bit of vandal graffiti, I’ll post that some time.
Ah Tammy is such a hero! Love that pic of her — have seen her at work with those kids and it’s no easy feat but she does an incredible job. That’s love, right there.
Can’t agree more. She’s a delightful hero.
The red traffic light reminded me of the red coat in Schindlers List.
Never seen that movie. I have a fear of Spielberg.
Some superb photos, Chris. As Rich says, the photo witht the three telephone pole crosses is brilliant. Also love the vultures and Malaysia.
But what’s a ‘real photographer’? Is it different to a ‘real writer’?
