Scientology Joburg
I’ve always wanted to go to L. Ron Hubbard’s house in Johannesburg, and I finally got my chance when we went to make a video about Scientology in South Africa.
As a science fiction fan, I was fascinated by the collection of magazines and books from the Golden Age of Sci Fi, the 30s and onwards. Say what you will about L. Ron, he could write some bodice ripping alien stuff with the best of them.
And the house is beautiful, a perfect 50s split level house. Could be in the hills of LA.
As to the religion itself – take a look at the video we made about the house, and including an interview with the head of Scientology in SA.

The video guys are editing now, but we have 2 hours of footage. So it should be up tomorrow, or Friday. But I’ll let you know. We’re combining tour of house with interview with head Scientologist, so it’s a little more complicated to edit down to 4mins.

Chris Roper – what a shame – looks like you have fallen for it again – supporting Scientology now?
Why on earth would you think I’m supporting Scientology? It’s a deranged religion, like most of them. Doesn’t stop me from appreciating the wackiness of it.
Why on earth would you? I don’t know – you tell me – why does Tom Cruise stay a Scientologist? Perhaps it will do you some good to look at the past history of Scientology and realise that it is a grotesque money-making scam that was dreamed up by L. Ron Hubbard – now masquerading as a ‘religion’. Religion my foot!

Uh, dude – I know what Scientology is. Just like I know what Catholicism is. And I know that L. Ron was a lunatic conman. Can I put it any clearer than that? You’ve confused a light-hearted look at a Sci-Fi writer’s house with an apologia for a religion. All religions are pretty much the same to me.
Pity I missed out on this. I would have made a meal of it. No, not holy communion, just a meal. The part about T.C. (can’t say his name out loud..)mentioned by “Joe” made me feel a bit ill. Love the pics.
